The sponsoring body of Catholic Ming Yuen Secondary School is Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and is a Catholicism school. The mission of the school: "Based on the Christian faith of love, students from different walks of life are taught to gain more exposure to many aspects through a better understanding of themselves, and in turn, to consolidate their philosophy of life. Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

S.1 Orientation Activities: During the summer holidays, orientation activities and summer activities are organised for the new students, providing them with academic pathway courses and diverse activities as well as an English day camp. In these ways, students' summer holidays are enriched to prepare them for their new secondary school life. What’s more, at the beginning of the school year, the S.1 class teachers will accompany their students for lunch and lunchtime activities which are arranged by different school departments to help the new students better adapt to their new school life. The School Guidance Team and the Green Science Society regularly organise health talks and environmental workshops to arouse students' health and environmental awareness. The Red Cross Youth Committee provides health services and the PE Department also promotes student fitness development programmes.

School Facilities (for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs)

Besides standard classrooms and laboratories, there is the Computer Room and the MMLC. In order to help develop students’ multi-intelligence, we have Maker Space, the English Corner, the Campus TV, the GIS Room, the Dancing Room, the Library, the Student Activity Room and the Parents' Resources Room. All classrooms are equipped with air-conditioners, a computer, a projector, a visualiser and a screen. Each student has a locker. There is the Hall, Self-study Rooms, the Home Economics Room, the Music Room, the Visual Art Room, the Counselling Room, the Social Worker's Room, the PE Room, Staff Rooms, Accessible Toilets and a lift available on the campus.

School's Major Concerns:

School Management Organisation:
The Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) adopts school-based management with a well-established management framework. The School Development Committee and a number of committees are set up to deal with academic affairs, curriculum, discipline, counselling, career planning, extra-curricular activities, moral, civic and national education, general affairs and the daily routine of the Parent-Teacher Association.

School Green Policy:
1) The Green Campus Scheme helps inspire students to love their environment. 2) The Organic Farm, Aquaponics and Hydroponic farming let our students cherish the value of food. 3) Recycling bins are placed on the campus for sorting recyclable products. The amount of waste disposed is recorded so as to reduce solid waste in school. 4) Besides the Green Ambassador Scheme, a smart meter is installed to record the amount of electricity used in school. Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
Students are encouraged to brush up their skills in English, Cantonese and Putonghua through a series of learning and co-curricular activities. This helps to provide them with more chances to be exposed to English and Putonghua. English debates, English Speaking Stage, morning sharing and other English-related activities during lunchtime are also organised. More exposure to Putonghua is provided for students through excursions to mainland China and Taiwan. Students are also encouraged to join the speech festival and public speaking activities.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
1) We aim at upgrading the DSE results by allocating extra tutorial lessons for S.5 and S.6 students. 2) With the implementation of E-learning, more interactive ways of learning with IT are available. The immersive simulation learning environment VR Cave allows students to encounter various knowledge principles in an interactive way. 3) Enhancement classes are provided for the newly arrived students from mainland China. Individualised Education Programmes (IEP) are scheduled for students to yield the most desirable results. 4) Optimising the Senior Secondary Core subjects with the introduction of Language Enhancement Courses in S.4 and S.5 helps brush up students’ language ability and their learning skills. 5) The “I Can Fly” Scheme for S.5 and S.6 students helps equip them with better exam skills and improve time management. 6) “Open Classes” are promoted for more professional sharing with existing teachers and outsiders. 7) Extra lessons are available for elite training on Saturday mornings.

Curriculum highlights: 1) For junior forms, our diversified school-based curriculum can cater to learners’ diversity and their interests. 2) We offer after-school extension lessons to enhance effectiveness in learning. 3) S.4 students can opt for School-based Applied Learning Courses. 4) Measures are taken to upgrade the elite students and help consolidate the weaker ones to cater to the needs of different students in their learning and growth.

Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1) Reading to learn: The Reading Sessions help create a good reading atmosphere. Our library has launched a new reading scheme in addition to the existing book fair, reading club, book recommendation through videos and other cross-curricular activities. 2) Interactive learning through IT: MMLC, Computer Room and the GIS Room, Maker Space and the introduction of immersive simulation classroom help promote the E-learning environment. With the BYOD Scheme, S.1 to S.5 students can borrow iPads for self-directed learning both inside and outside the school. 3) Implementation of STEM Education: The installation of solar panels, Aerosim, Smart Hydroponic farming system, Robot Master training system, and IT Lab in the junior form curriculum help develop students’ potential in STEM. 4) Moral, civic and national education: Through cross-subject activities, students can analyse social issues to raise their independent thinking skills on special topics. Service-learning is encouraged. To care for the community, a Community Exploration Program is held to help students become good citizens through understanding the needs faced by the underprivileged in society. National education and communication with the students in mainland China are strengthened through active participation in different exchange activities with Sister Schools. 5) Project learning: Group projects or individual project learning are led by teachers of Liberal Studies to help our students develop different generic and inquiry skills, such as data collection, integration, analysis and the skills of findings presentation.

Life Planning Education:
Through diversified activities, students can have more understanding of themselves and develop their potentials. Students are nurtured to set up their goals through personality tests, individual career counselling and job descriptions. Besides job tasting programmes and company visits, Applied Learning Courses and individual career counselling are provided for senior form students to prepare well for the future.

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
1) Enhancement of English Ability:(a) An emphasis on small-class sizes as well as tailor-made materials to cater for learners’ diversity. (b) During extension lessons, elite courses are provided for students. (c) We have also established the English Orientation Month and a good English learning environment. 2) Student Support: (a) Professional services are purchased to cater for the needs and growth of different students. (b) The Student Support Team provides support for students with special education needs. (c) IEP is tailor-made for some SEN students. 3) Newly-arrived Children:(a) Extra Academic Support: English and Cantonese Courses are provided after school. (b) Growth Support programmes: an orientation programme, parenting activities, community visits and other programmes are conducted to help our students integrate into the community.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
The Student Support Team will carry out language enhancement activities and one-to-two tutoring for students with dyslexia after school. In the junior forms, collaborative teaching is promoted in addition to cooperative learning and graded worksheets to cater to students with special educational needs. Besides language therapy services for students with speech disorders, the team organises different multi-intelligent and functional groups for hyperactive and autistic students. School participates in the Student Mental Health Support Scheme and provides timely mental support to the students in need. The school has a special "Caring Week" and invites external institutions to organise activities for our students. The "Counselling Psychologist Service" is also engaged to prevent and treat students with mental health issues in the school. The school also makes use of the Support Grant for Non-Chinese Speaking Students with Special Educational Needs. Measures to provide adaptation for Learning and Assessment:
1. Summative assessments and formative assessments are adopted. For formative assessments, we evaluate students in forms of quizzes, assignments and performance in class as well as online evaluation for instant feedback. For summative assessments, we have two uniform tests and two-term exams in the whole academic year.
2. Adjustment measures: To cater for the learners' diversity and the elite students, measures such as multiple learning tasks, graded worksheets, better learning environment, grouping, multi-sensory learning materials, questioning skills, and appropriate display of students' learning achievements are adopted to enhance students' learning confidence and learning effectiveness. Basic questions in the assessment papers help trace and analyse students’ academic results so as to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
To let students grow up happily and healthy, the school actively promotes cooperation and enhances sharing among parents and teachers. Parents always discuss issues with school, promote welfare to students and find ways to enhance the quality of teaching so as to enable students to have a balanced development in all the aspects of moral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and spiritual education. Parent representatives help supervise school books, school uniforms, school bus service and the quality of our canteen services are elected to our IMC. Facing a rapidly changing society and constantly reforming education system, home-school cooperation is important for the growth of our students. The PTA actively promotes parent education and has organised a series of parent education activities, inviting expert speakers and social organisations to give lectures and workshops to exchange experiences in nurturing children and the number of participants has increased year after year. The association also actively promotes networking activities, such as picnics, interest groups, basin feasts, Chinese New Year reunions and moon chasing barbecue evenings to ensure a strong bond among parents, shares experiences and to help students grow up healthily. Besides serving the community, the PTA members also actively help with our school activities such as on Sports Day and Parents' Day.

To live up to the motto from Father Vincent Lebbe: “Total Renunciation, True Charity, Constant Joy", our teachers bear in mind one utmost important spirit– to serve everyone with no discrimination and care for students’ needs. Future Development

School Development Plan:
With the optimising measures for the four senior secondary core subjects, adaptation of the teaching content and strategies to cater for learners’ diversity, foundation of our students is further consolidated so as to enhance their academic performance. With the elite training scheme, the academically stronger students in different forms are further reinforced. At the same time, the school uses IT to improve learning and teaching, implement e-learning and develop STEM education. This helps cultivate students' self-directed learning and enhance their learning skills. A reading scheme has been launched in a bid to boost the language ability of students. Besides, a variety of learning experiences are provided to widen the horizons of the junior formers to set their goals. For the senior formers, guidance is provided to equip them for their future challenges. Every year, different types of values are highlighted, “Life” is this year’s theme. All these help to shape our students’ positive personalities and through the involvement of service-learning, uniform groups and the Hong Kong Award for Young People, students develop their talents and strengthen their leadership training. The ultimate goal is to raise students’ confidence and develop a positive self-image.

Teacher Professional Training and Development:
Sustainable development in teachers’ professionalism helps upgrade the effectiveness in teaching. Besides Teachers’ Development Day, professional development seminars and lectures by experts held in the school, teachers actively attend courses on “Catering for Diverse Learning Needs” and workshops by educational psychologists. Our school also actively liaises with off-campus providers and organises activities of different themes, such as participating in the "Mindshift" organised by the University of Hong Kong, inviting psychiatrists to the school to give lectures on students' mental health. With the Joint School Teacher Development Day coordinated by the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a lecture on New Vision of Campus Law helped enhance professional exchanges among co-workers and created an atmosphere of mutual cooperation. With the “Mentoring Scheme”, new teachers are taken care of in order to help them adapt to the new environment.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
Implementation of a 3 "Mores" strategy --More Experience, More Services and More Rewards, together with a self-directed learning attitude, self-discipline and self-confidence in the learning environment so as to cultivate positive values and a sense of perseverance among our students. During the extension time, a total of about 40 extra-curricular activities are set up under 5 categories (academic, interests, physique/art, service and religion). Our focus is on STEM Artificial Intelligence, Green Technology, the Basketball Team, Badminton Team, Football Team, Jazz Dance Club, Lion Dance, Marching band, Drama Club, Catholic Students’ Group and small tutoring Groups in the community. Junior formers may join the Hong Kong Youth Award Scheme and the "One-student-one Uniform Scheme" in which they can join the Red Cross and Sea Cadet Corps to strengthen their bodies and develop a sense of perseverance. School Clubs also regularly organise lunchtime activities like book fairs and the Four-house Fun Day so that students can learn different generic skills.
