Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

Orientation Activities: Week-long S.1 orientation activities are held in Mid-July. Teachers and current students share their knowledge with parents and newly enrolled students so that they can understand school policy, support measures for students' growth and the practice of self-regulated learning.
Secondary One Adaptation Programme is held during summer holiday. The programme consists of meditation experience, team building training, self-regulated learning skill training, class building activities and so on, aiming to help S.1 students adapt to their new school life.
Healthy life: Through the curricula in all subjects, personal growth lessons, talks, workshops and visits, the School aims to promote health, drug and sex education to raise students' awareness of healthy living.
The School constantly monitors the quality of food and lunch boxes available from the tuck shop to ensure students are provided with a balanced diet while raising students' awareness of healthy diet.

School Management

School's Major Concerns:
1. To cultivate good learning habits, self-study ability and learning skills.

School Management Organisation:
Implementing school-based management and student-centred principle, the IMC designates the Principal to lead 3 major departments and 9 committees for all school affairs. An Executive Committee is set up for the discussion of school policies. Each committee is in charge of different affairs. Furthermore, 8 Key Learning Areas direct 20 subjects through learning circles to develop subject plans that align with school development goals, and seek continuous improvement through regular evaluations.

Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
1. Signs and slogans in Chinese and English are posted around school campus, Chinese and English departments provide online learning platforms, English Corner, English morning assemblies and morning reading are organized for students to experience various activities. 2. To motivate students to read extensively, both Chinese and English language departments organize various co-curricular activities that extend their learning experience beyond the classroom. For example, Chinese Department organizes storytelling competitions, cultural quiz competitions, debate contests, cultural studies, seminars solo verse competitions, emcee training courses, interviews, inquiry studies on authors and so on. 3. To implement the fine-tuning of MOI policy, Science subject extends its curriculum to provide students with more exposure to English. 4. Some lessons are conducted by both local English teachers and the Native-speaking English teacher to enhance the interaction in English lessons and take better care of the needs of different students.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
The School provides an education which emphasizes spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical, communal and aesthetic development among students. Nurturing students with the ability to learn and to become citizens with good qualities, inspiring students and fostering them with a positive attitude towards learning are the beliefs the School embraces. 1. The School stresses foundation consolidation and implements self-regulated learning from F.1 to develop students' generic skills. Learning for Good is added to F.1 and F.2 syllabi to highlight the importance of serving the community while studying.
2. Chinese, English and Maths lessons in junior forms are split into 4 ability groups to give better care and cater for learner diversity. 3. Every subject has subject-based reward schemes, enhancement and remedial measures, note-taking strategies and study strategies to enhance students’ learning effectiveness. 4. Core subjects including Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies organise after-school enhancement and remedial classes to provide high achievers with extra training and weaker students with academic support. 5. The School has set up a “Senior Form Elite Training Programme" under the School-based Learning and Support Programmes and the Elite Student Project offered by EDB and other institutions. 6. The School utilises a variety of e-learning tools, platforms and pedagogies to facilitate self-regulated learning and enhance students' IT literacy and learning effectiveness.

School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 2X. Ten HKDSE electives are available for BSC students. Each student is eligible to choose two subjects and they can also enroll for applied learning courses according to their abilities and interests.
2. Curriculum highlights: A. To cater for students' diverse interests, aptitude, abilities and needs, the School offers senior form students applied learning courses and a Japanese language course. B. To enrich students' learning experience, the School integrates Physical Education and Buddhist Moral Values Education into the curriculum and organises activities, field trips, projects, services, visits, interviews, overseas trips and religious activities. C. To consolidate and enhance students' foundation on core subjects, the School holds Elite and Booster courses for F.5 and F.6 students.

Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1. Project learning: a co-creation and co-learning course is offered in junior high school. Teachers and students explore community difficulties or problems in daily life through the form of project learning, which assists students in shaping the cognition and meta-cognition of learning in a systematic way so as to enhance the initiative of individual learning, thereby boosting students' independent learning ability and generic ability. 2. The School has launched BYOD Programme in a gradual and orderly manner. The programme, which is extended to the whole-school approach in 2020, further puts student-centred learning into practice. 3. Reading to learn: The School emphasizes cultivating students' reading interest and skills. The School Library launches morning reading sessions, book sharing, book recommendation, reading stars programme, award scheme, book fairs and so on. Pump-up Station in school library offers students diverse learning resources. Departments of all subjects devise subject-based reading strategies. 4. Moral education and civic education: through Buddhist education activities, students can experience the spirit of self-interest, and they can thus understand the importance of being a decent and compassionate person who cares for the public, learns to reflect on the relationship between the natural environment and oneself and society in order to construct and consolidate their local, national, and global citizen identity and explore the direction of sustainable social development.

Life Planning Education:
1. Through Buddhism education and life planning education, students can understand the value and meaning of life. They can experience the spirit of self-interest, understand their own abilities and limitations so as to strengthen their sense of control over learning and growth. 2. The School sets up school-based Career and Life Planning lessons for junior forms to help them understand themselves thoroughly and set their goals early in their school careers. 3. The School offers individual and group counselling for S.3 and S.6 students to develop their own perspective so as to enlighten them to shape their future. 4. The School invites alumni to share their work experiences so that students can obtain first-hand workplace information. 5. The School works closely with non-governmental organizations, providing tailor-made and diversified career-oriented courses and workplace experiences. 6. Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
1. The school attaches importance to class management. With the system of ‘dual class teachers’ in most classes, students are guided to be respectful, considerate and cooperative so as to build the common good. Our teachers are united through collaboration and professional development. 2. To build up an inclusive culture, various competitions such as inter-class competitions, inter-house competitions, sports day and class board decorations are organized.
3. Based on the school context, our Inclusive Education Team coordinated by the Special Education Need (SEN) Coordinator establishes our SEN policy.
Through close collaboration among the SEN coordinator, the educational psychologist, social workers and teachers, students with special educational needs are offered an optimum learning environment.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
A student Support Team has been formed to assist students with SEN. Members include the Special Education Need Coordinator, Educational Psychologist, our school’s speech therapist and social workers, Inclusive Education Teaching Assistants. They will provide assistance to the students under the principles of Whole-school approach and Catering for learners’ diversity. Individual meetings, group trainings, external activity experience and curriculum adjustment are provided to cultivate learning motivation, capability and a sense of learning efficacy of students.

Home-School Co-operation:

School Development Plan:
1. To enhance the motivation and learning ability of students as well as catering the learning diversity. 2. To tackle the mindset of ‘self-limiting’ by boosting the self-confidence of students and encouraging them to cherish the moment. Students are guided to be responsible, benevolent and loving. 3. By cultivating the Buddhist spirit, students will care for the community and learn to serve other people. Teachers and students will build up a rigorous and caring school culture. 4. Teacher Professional Training and Development:
1. Teacher professional development guidelines are established to comply with EDB’s Professional Ladder for Teacher policy and requirement of school development. 2. At least four teacher professional development periods and four teaching professional development days are organized annually to carry out professional studies on specific modules. 3. Besides establishing administrative committee and Key Learning Area (KLA) as coordination units, regular meetings and Common Lesson Preparation periods are held to foster experience sharing and professional exchange between administrative committees and subject departments. 4. In order to strengthen teacher professional development, subject-based teacher professional training and development plans are formulated annually by each subject department. Committee members are encouraged to pursue further studies and carry out professional sharing. The professional development team also systematically arranges subject departments to participate in the school-based collaboration schemes organized by the EDB and various tertiary institutions. 5. To promote trust and mutual understanding in the team, day camps and team-building activities with collaborative tasks are organized. Middle management is thus strengthened as well.

1. AI Education: BSC is one of the Microsoft "AI4Good" Hero Schools and Participating Schools of CUHK Jockey Club AI for the Future Project to promote innovative teaching with artificial intelligence. The School has successfully applied for Project WeCan launched by the Wharf (Holdings) Limited and been funded more than HK$1 million for educational use. The School utilizes the resources to provide students with business and internship opportunities, language enhancement courses and creative physical and aesthetic activities.
2. Reaching Higher Levels of Achievement: BSC works conscientiously towards the ultimate goal of developing students’ full potential and challenging students to reach higher levels of achievement. As a pilot school of the Microsoft AI4Good scheme, we aim to promote Innovation Education through introducing an AI programme into our curriculum. We have collaborated with HKU in co-developing a school-based interdisciplinary learning curriculum for students. Being invited to share our curriculum development experiences in the “STEM Education Good Practice Sharing Seminar”, a secondary school teacher training session held by EDB, we were awarded with an honorary Gold Award in the International Outstanding e-Learning Awards 2021/22.
5. Innovation Education (Elite Education)
• In order to uphold a core value of our school- “to enlighten and benefit oneself”, BSC STEMLAB and Learning for Good, a school-based curriculum, are established to encourage students to be aware of the limitations of the Others. Throughout the years, our students have been equipped with problem-solving skills from coursework and contests. Centering around the theme of using innovative technology to better lives, we have received honours in various acknowledged contests and/or events:
• Gold Award, The Greater Bay Area STEM Excellence Award (Hong Kong), Hong Kong New Emerging Technology Education Association
• Gold Award, HKHS Gerontech Competition, Hong Kong Housing Society
• Our students were invited by The Women's Foundation HK to educate girl students from different schools on coding, and were presented with a Silver Award for The HKFYG “Easy Volunteer” for Volunteer Service (Groups).
• Our teachers were invited by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups to be instructors in a STEM professional development training workshop for social workers to assist them in serving local teenagers.
