Learning English through Social Issues
2020 Part B question 3
In recent years, the number of small independent stationery shops in Hong Kong has fallen.
Write a news report for the Hong Kong Post.
Explain this trend and discuss whether independent stationery shops can survive.
Independent stationery shops struggling to exist
Mr. Smith, who has operated an independent stationery shop, is planning to close his shop next month. A few decades ago, independent stationery shops used to be ubiquitous around our society. Not only do they serve stationery we need, but they also offer cards, toys, festival items never imagined vanquishing from our society. Yet, as time flies, these shops have been closing down one offer to others. It is without a doubt that independent shops are close to extinction, thanks to the elements in our modern society.
To commence with, the fierce competition has driven independent stores out of the market. It comes as no surprise as large bookstores are prospering in our modern society. Even though these bookstores are prospering in our modern society. Although these bookstores make a living mainly by selling books, they also offer stationeries which are cheaper and are more diversified, setting the business opportunities of both individual customers and large business. While the independent stationery shops could barely survive the competition from large retailers with the aid of social networks established in years. The advent of electronic marking is killing off the small independent shops. Thanks to e-payment such as Alipay and e-shops such as Taobao stationery is offered at a lower price but with higher quality. Facing such fierce competition, it is no wonder that the independent stationery shops, like the shop opened by Mr. Smith, are fading away. It is the large retailers and e-shops that leave us and Mr. Smith no choice.
The fall of independent stationery shops can also be attributed to the changes in our interests, while Mr. Smith has been trying to seek alternatives to save his store, almost none of which has been successful, be it toy cars or toy pianos. While stationery remains a heavy component to diversify the risks and to enhance their competitiveness. While the owners are clever that they are willing to introduce, it is unfortunate that they are yet new elements to keep abreast of time. While the shop owners try to offer toys for children such as cards and toy batts, the children are fascinated with mobile games. As the owner introduces lanterns during mid-Autumn festivals, Families opt to play video games on Switch at home. As our hobbies and interests are inclined to shift to electronic games, the independent stationery shop’s attempt to shift focus through traditional toys also ended up in complete failure.
The lack of a new generation is also to be blamed for the vanquishing of independent stationery shops when Mary, an independent stationery shop owner to be returned soon, asks her son to operate the shop for her, her son said. I would rather work in a large book store. It’s more comfortable and has a higher salary. Under the booming economy, the new generation of teenagers is desperate for a higher salary for their lavish expenditure. In stark contrast, the independent stationery stores are earning fewer year by year, so are the owners and employees running the shop. Knowing that there is little to earn, it is no stranger that teenagers are reluctant to join the small stationery sellers. Instead, they would rather become the employers of large book stores, or run electronic shops of their own. As decades passed, owners of these independent book stores became too old to run the shops. Despite the efforts they paid, it is futile for them to seek a successor. Feeling tired, sad, and frustrated, the shop owners had no choice but to shut down their stores permanently.
It is the skyrocketing rent in Hong Kong, however, that should bear the greatest brunt of the saddening trend. Peter, who closed down a few months ago, claimed that he would have earned enough to make a living, had the rent been a little lower. The price of housing flats has been drastically soaring since the end of SARS, and the shop rent has been following suit. While the independent stationery stores have been sparing no paths to make ends meet, the profit they made is far from enough to chase the increase in Hong Kong’s rent. Owing to the high rent introduced by the flat owners and general economic conditions, it is blatantly expensive that the independent stationery shops can hardly make it through, although they tried to survive with the connection and network it had built over decades.
It is crystal clear that most independent stationery shops would disappear within years if not all of them. While it is gladdening to see some shop owners desperate to make a breakthrough, the solutions of the owners may have changed the nature of independent stationery stores that we find warm and familiar with. A striking example is that a store that used to be located in Wong Tai Sin attempted to survive the trend by operating in the form of an e-shop. The store may have survived, but hardly can we find the staff member and old toys which we perish the most. After all, independent stationery shops are prone to changes and technological advancement.
Given that the independent stationery stores are disappearing no soon, Hong Kong post readers should perhaps seize the opportunity to pay a visit. Nevertheless, these are the invaluable assets that we one loved and perished.
