Sharing is Caring: Pop Culture Edition

Whether we know it or not, we have probably taken part in contributing to pop culture. Not only is it something unavoidable in the entertainment industry, but it may also very well be embedded into our cultures. But how does this information spread, you ask? Most notably information on popular culture can be spread through 2 major channels through print media or electronic media like social media.

I get most of my information through the internet. Specifically, I hear about popular culture trends through social media. Although we may all agree that the Internet may not be the most factual place in the world, social media does a remarkably good job of spreading information about pop culture. There are as many niche areas of pop culture as there are stars in the sky, so today I will focus on two of the larger areas of pop culture: TV and movies, and music and concerts.

As a young person with access to the internet, I am unsurprisingly a fan of all sorts of TV shows and movies. With the emergence of social media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, many influencers have gained huge amounts of followers, and subsequently, Internet fame. Fans of TV shows such as The Good Place, or popular movies like products from Disney or Marvel, all gather across the many social media to share and discuss the things they love to watch.

Similarly, fans of music and concert-goers also congregate across the web to discuss the music and artists they love, albeit with the addition of sound and audio-based social platforms like SoundCloud, Spotify, and Stracks. These platforms in particular allow fans of music and concerts to stream, share, or create music of their own for the world to see.

A major reason why social media carries information about pop culture so quickly and why it allowed pop culture to spread so extensively to us consumers is because of the interactivity available for the fans of pop culture. Actors from TV shows and movies often have accounts on most major social media platforms to promote their work. Actors like Tom Holland, who recently gained fame for portraying Spiderman, will even facilitate the spread of pop culture information by posting about the next movie he will star in when his followers ask for a trailer. Similarly, musicians offer the same sort of interactivity and communication with fans by releasing concert tour dates, replying to messages, and promoting their works. Promotional events, such as actors and artists taking over a site’s Twitter for a day to answer questions, or appearing in various YouTube videos, also provide consumers like us with a lot of direct information about pop culture.

Another reason why I prefer obtaining information about pop culture from social media is due to the fan communities that exist there. Blog posts on Tumblr about a fan’s reaction to seeing a show or concert, or even a YouTube video of fans reacting to a movie trailer for the first time is a good way to learn about the general public’s views on a piece of media. Due to the fast-paced spread of information on social media that was mentioned previously, we can obtain information much more readily than compared to print sources.

The trend of showing reactions, introducing artists, and communicating between fans is something unique to pop culture on social media. As fickle as parts of the Internet may be, there are still places that spread reliable information, especially on pop culture.
